Abstract

Artificial Intelligence has always combined the mystery of human intelligence with the programmer's confidence that any task can be specified as steps a computer can performed -- plus a frisson of "robots run amok". This talk will provide an overview of the field, from its foundations in Aristotelian logic to modern successes in chess playing, automatic translation, data mining, and Jeopardy. Special emphasis will be put on the neural network approach, which models the anatomical structure of the brain with intriguing results.

Biography

Dan Frost received his Ph. D. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from UC Irvine in 1997. Since then he has taught at UCI, and recently helped create UCI's new major in Computer Game Science.
